I went to Ellie May Jeffersâs home on Hickory Street, a gray ranch house with white trim, all freshly painted. The lawn was lush and the shrubbery was landscaped. A flagstone path led from the sidewalk to the front steps. High-stakes poker must pay well in Texas. I rang the bell and waited, listening to the ticking of a sprinkler and staring at the rainbow in its spray. The inside door opened â the screen door remained shut â and standing in front of me was a blonde block of womanhood.
âYes?â she said.
âAre you Ellie May Jeffers?â
âWhoâs asking?â
âMy name is Dermot Sparhawk,â I said. âYou helped a friend of mine, and I wanted to say thank you.â
âWhat friend?â
âSkeeter Gruskowski, you went to the emergency room with him.â
âWho are you?â She stepped back. âAre you with the police?â
âIâm not with the police. Iâd like to ask you a few questions about Skeeter.â
âYour accent, youâre from Boston.â
She pegged me, not that I cared.
âI know about the poker game, and I know you were the dealer,â I said. âIâm not looking for any trouble. I just want some information.â
âWhat information?â
âDid something happen at the game that rattled Skeeter, a fight or an argument, maybe a misunderstanding? Why did he think he was having a heart attack?â
âNothing bad happened. As matter of fact Skeeter cleaned up, and thatâs all Iâm saying about the matter.â
âHow did the other players react to an outsider cleaning up?â I asked. âWere they angry? Is that what shook him?â
âI already told you, thatâs all Iâm going to say about it. Skeeter won big, and Skeeter is doing fine. The hospital released him.â
âDid he say where he was going next?â
She said no and closed the door. At least she didnât slam it. I stood for a moment and listened to ticks of the sprinkler and followed the flagstone path back to my car.
